If you’re going to make an impact on your world, you’ll have to embrace imperfection eventually. This little book will help you.
It’s not easy.
You’d like for it all to turn out just the way you imagined it would or could. But it’s not going to. Imperfection is a necessary ingredient of meaningful progress. And the question is, where did you ever get the idea that getting it all right was the right way to go anyway?
Check this out.
If you’re like me, you struggle with perfectionism. So today, I’m going to suggest a little — and I mean little — book that will help you with your “I” problem. It’s called The Gifts of Imperfection. It’s by author Brené Brown. Here’s an exerpt from the book to whet your whistle:
“Wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough. It’s going to bed at night thinking, Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.”
But hang on a minute.
All that smarmy stuff that you just read in that quote might leave you feeling a little embarrassed. A little exposed. Because you’re a man, right? And real men don’t talk like this. It sounds a little girly, right?
Think again.
I’m just going to suggest that you read the words one more time. Because actually, what Brown has to say hits you where it hurts, and where you could really benefit from letting up a little bit on your obsession with perfection. Embracing the imperfect could be just the thing to enable you to get out of your funk and into meaningful action.
So please do this.
Please use the next few minutes to watch this brief talk by Brown about how to embrace the power of vulnerability. And then come right back for today’s takeaway.
Ask yourself.
Would you rather be perfect and make very little impact on your world, or would you be willing to be a little imperfect and make a greater impact? It’s all part of relinquishing what holds you back.
