You might be surprised by this book suggestion. It’s a kid’s book. And yet, it has in it all the essential elements that give us a reason for leaving home in search of our Why.

reason for leaving, tell your story

Wonders.

This little book is called The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs, written by Betty G. Birney,  published in 2005. I read it to my children, who are now off exploring the world.

Why?

Why would I recommend this book to an adult audience? Because it is one of the best books I have found to answer the question, “Why?” I mean, yes. There are other books like Frankl’s Man’s Search For Meaning. Ablsolutely. But few books are as delightfully full of what motivates us as this small tale of a boy with a reason for leaving home in search of his dreams.

Listen.

Here’s how it starts:

“Sometimes extraordinary things begin in ordinary places. A fancy-dancy butterfly starts out in a plain little cocoon. A great big apple tree grows from a tiny brown speck of seed. And the Wonders started right on our own front porch on a hot summer night I would have forgotten on the spot if it hadn’t been for what got started then and kept on going.”

What kept on going?

You want to know, right? Well, what happened next is that Eben McCallister, who lived in the tiny town of Sassafras Springs, Missouri made a deal with his dad. Because Eben was tired of boring old Sassafras Springs and wanted to go see the Seven Wonders of the World.

What was the deal?

So what was the deal with his dad? The deal was that if Eben could find seven Wonders right there in Sassafras Springs in seven days, he would get to ride the train to Silver Peak, Colorado. And while that wasn’t quite like seeing the Colossus of Rhodes, it was a start. It gave Eben the motivation to get moving.

So please do this.

Consider the question: what gets me moving? And consider checking out this little book, The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs by Betty G. Birney.
