When we ask for help, the magical power of “we” emerges — which changes everything.

magical power

Let’s start with a song today.

It would be great if you would actually take a few minutes (or at least a few seconds!) to sing (or hum) along with this tune, to get into the mood of “we” today.

Did you know that taking a few minutes to sing can have a positive effect on your day? You might consider adding a little of this to your daily routine.

What did you hear?

We all need someone to lean on, yes.

We can all lend a hand, yes.

But what is the refrain?

Call me! Call me!

My question for you today is,

Are you calling out for help when you need a helping hand?

Ask for help.

In the construction trades, we have a saying, which you may have found to be true in your own life:

“Two can do the work of three, if the two work together.”

When we ask for help, at least two things happen:

  • We allow ourselves to become vulnerable, which has long-term benefits for us, personally
  • We also allow another person to come alongside us, to offer assistance, which is good for that person, because we all want to feel needed.

Everyone in this scenario has the potential to win. This is the magical power of “we.”

Who and How?

The question then becomes, who am I willing to ask for help, and how?

Many of the men I work with face this dilemma, which is one reason why so many men waste countless hours on social media sites looking for their next career opportunity — often when it’s both important and urgent that they do so.

I don’t have anything against social media. Far from it! For the sharing of ideas and perhaps when we are looking for long-term connections, it’s good. But when it comes to making, for example, a hasty career move, the place to start is with those you know personally.

You may object.

You may object for any number of reasons, but most of all because you are shy about asking those you know best for the help you most need.

If this is the case, consider this:

You have something of value to offer in every conversation. It may help to realize that as you are asking for help, you are also offering help to your friends by allowing them help you.

And besides, you may give them an insight you hadn’t even intended to, just by showing up and spending some time with them.

The takeaway:

Ask for help. And then, when someone asks you for help, give them a hand, to complete the circle of “we.”
