What are you waiting for? Stop waiting — and start animating.
Here’s the difference.
You probably think Walt Disney was a genius. And you know what? You’re right. But what you might not know is that he was also courageous. Which means he moved ahead in spite of some serious depression and doubt. And so can you. In fact, unless you do, we’ll all miss out on your best work. So let’s get moving.
What do you think?
What do you think will happen if you keep putting it off? Here’s what will happen: you will get better and better at putting it off. Because confidence comes with repetition. Which means that every day you delay, you get better and better at not doing what you want to do.
Stop waiting: start animating.
So animate your life. And I get it. You might think that animation means you need to be able to draw. Not necessarily. Because even if you can’t draw, you can animate. Animation is the simple act of bringing something to life. What Disney did was bring simple human aspirations to life through his particular form of art — which was to draw lots of pictures and make the pictures move. But there are many other ways to animate something.
Here’s just one example. Let’s say you are struggling with a relationship. The relationship seems dead, or at least not as alive as you want it to be. So what can you do? Now you know — animate it. Bring it to life. Or move on. Did you see what I just did? I suggested two ways to bring a relationship to life:
- Make the existing relationship more alive.
- Move on to a new relationship that is alive.
Both of the above two are valid ways to bring to life what is essential to you: a relationship that is alive. And notice this: both 1 and 2 above can happen with the same person. Or not. Animation will require of you that you keep your creative brain engaged.
So please do this.
Watch this brief talk by George Blair-West and then come right back for today’s takeaway.
Did you notice?
George Blair-West is clearly not Walt Disney. He’s a pretty ordinary guy. And yet, he brought something to life for us, simply by looking at it closely. This is the essence of animation. So please — stop waiting, and start animating.
