You’re waiting for the perfect moment to make the leap, when what would really help is if you would just take one step.
Here’s the secret.
What is the secret to living a powerful, meaningful life? You do realize that the clock is ticking, while you waste time worrying over what will come next, right? Meanwhile, you hesitate. If you want to live a life that will remove most of your anxiety, while giving you a feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day, listen to this:
The secret of walking to the South Pole is to put one foot in front of the other, and to do this enough times.
— Erling Kagge, Silence in the Age of Noise
Did you catch that?
One step at a time. That’s the secret. It’s so simple, yet most of the men you know don’t do this. They wait; they hesitate. Which is why “most men live lives of quiet desperation,” to quote Thoreau. Why are they quiet? Why are they desperate? Because they have missed this simple, powerful secret. Because they are overwhelmed with the immensity of life to the point where they are not seeing what is right in front of them. Progress begins with one little step.
What about you?
Are you overwhelmed by the immensity of what you want and the relatively low chance that you will achieve it?
Take one step.
Let’s say you are working at a job that doesn’t thrill you. So every day you drag yourself off to this job, and every night you worry that your life is slipping away. In other words, you’re so caught up in the immensity of making a change out of this job into a better job, that you do nothing today to actually move the needle. Or, you could take one step today, toward getting out of that job and into a better one. Whatever your version of this story, what one step could you take today to move in the right direction?
Key point:
Take one small step today in the right direction.
