Stop waiting around for assurance. All you need to get started is the possibility of success. Here’s how to take a step today.

possibility

It seems (im)possible.

Some days are worse than others. But even on a good day, what you face may feel daunting. And because you don’t like pain, you naturally back up a step when what you want seems improbable.

The difference.

Possible and probable are different. Possible means it might happen. Probable means it is more likely than not to happen. The problem comes when you go for the probable to the detriment of the possible.

Meaning: stop wasting time overthinking this thing. Make some progress toward what you want without the assurance that what you want will happen right away.

Take a step today.

One step.

Especially because you are smart and creative, you may be thinking twelve steps ahead when really all you need to know is the next step and to have a little more faith in yourself.

Ask yourself: “Am I looking for certainty?” Because if you are, you are in good company. Most of us want to know for sure that something will be worth it before we take one more step.

Engage the possibility.

But if you wait to know for sure, chances are good that you will not change the world in the way you long to do so. There is a fire in you that is put out a little more each time you rely on the probable. The probable feels better. Safer. More reliable. But the possible is what will stretch you to take a step today toward your dream, even when that step feels like it won’t make a difference.

Consider this.

Please listen to this short talk (about 26 minutes) by Cole Bennett, about how to take a step, even when the way forward seems (im)possible. Then come right back for today’s takeaway.

The takeaway:

Stop waiting for the probable. Move toward what you want by taking one small step today that feels possible.
