Yes, it’s true. You do need to get through today. But what about your long-term investment in what you care about most?
We’re talking Q2.
You already know how important Q2, the second quadrant, is to your success. If you want a quick review on the quadrants, you’ll find it here. The point is, your success depends to a large degree on having an overall strategy that includes, but also looks beyond, today. Q2 is the intersection of what is important and not yet urgent. Unless you are invested in the overall arc of your own story, the events of today will feel either meaningless, overwhelming, or both. So let’s look at what it means to have a long-term investment strategy.
Start here.
Take a quick look at this clip. In Ari Wallach’s talk, you will notice several key concepts focused on having a (very) long-term approach to your life that you can begin to incorporate as soon as today. The video clip is only about fifteen minutes long. Please take a moment to watch. Then come right back for the takeaways for developing a long-term investment strategy for what you care about most.
What is your Longpath?
In the end, this is the question. Wallach talks about thinking transgenerationally, about futures, and about telos. But in the end, the question is about your Ithaka. Where is all of this going? And are you thinking far enough ahead so that what you do today has real meaning and significance in the long run?
Write it down.
And yes — it’s nice to think about this stuff. But like Wallach’s example of the conference where we all think about these things and it’s all lost in three months “at best,” please don’t make the mistake of letting this moment go by without locking in this approach in a way which is specific to your own life. The best way I know of to lock it in is to write it down. Will you take a few minutes right now to write out at least a draft of what your Longpath might be?
Key point:
Consider your Longpath and how it affects what you do today.
