Is it possible to change the trajectory of your life — the arc of your narrative — to actually become the man you want to be?

arc

What is your trajectory?

Your life story has a trajectory. What does that mean? It means your life is a story, and there is an arc to your story. Your life is going somewhere, and you are on that path right now. As Robert Frost said in his poem The Road Not Taken, when referring to two roads that diverged in a yellow wood:

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

Every step you take is leading you down one path or another.

Which path will you choose?

The path you choose is essential. Why? Because your story is a progression. As in the poem above, “Way leads on to way.” What you do today affects what happens tomorrow.

What you might not know is that you can control the trajectory of your life.

How?

Edit your life.

Create a structure that tells your story in the best way possible. Please watch these two short videos (about 7 minutes total) about story structure, and then come right back for today’s takeaway.

You can do this.

The challenge is to get started. Get out a piece of paper or open a fresh document on your computer and write a half-page about where your life is headed right now. What is your current trajectory? Be honest. Then write another half-page about where you want your life to go. Compare the two.

Key Point

You can control the arc of your narrative, and bend that arc in the direction you want your life to go.
