You’re afraid of something. We all are. For you, it might be fear that you’re not up to the task. Or it might be the fear of being abandoned. Whatever the fear, it’s time to stop running. Now is the time for courage. Here’s how to get some.
First of all, fear is natural.
Don’t let anyone tell you any different. Fear is in your DNA. It’s there to keep you alive. When you’re afraid, a sophisticated, coordinated response begins in your brain. The amygdala triggers the hypothalamus, which activates the pituitary gland, which is where the nervous system meets the hormone system.
It’s there to keep you alive.
But wait! There’s more. The sympathetic nervous system, responsible for the fight-or-flight response — gives the adrenal gland a nudge, encouraging it to squirt a dose of epinephrine into the bloodstream, while cortisol gets released, in response to ACTH, which brings about the rise in blood pressure, blood sugar, and white blood cells. Then, circulating cortisol turns fatty acids into energy, ready for the muscles to use, just in case.
So deal with it.
Fear is real. But so is courage. Which means it’s time to stop running. Because remember that courage is action in the face of fear. So please watch this brief (about 5 minutes) talk by Damon Davis about fear, and about how to turn that fear into courage, and then come right back for today’s takeaway.
