How can you make any progress if you keep lying to yourself? You can’t. How about this approach? Be honest.
Get real.
And by that, I simply mean: say what is really going on. Because far too often, you choose an extreme which isn’t honest. Either you say it’s going much better than it really is, or — at the other end of the spectrum — you say it’s going much worse than it really is.
Honest balance wins the day.
So what we’re looking for here is a simple accounting of reality.
For example, you might have had a rough day at work. And what do you say? “Today sucked.” And I get it. Some days feel bad. But did it really suck? If yes, fine. Say so. But most of your days are a mix of good and bad. And if you’re honest, there was some good even on a day that felt like it sucked. So look for the balance.
