It’s easy to focus on the negative. Because negativity is everywhere. And if you’re not careful, you’ll end up having a lousy day. But you don’t have to. Here’s how to keep your head up, even when everyone around you is losing theirs.

What’s going right?

Do you actually want to have a bad day? Most of us don’t start off each day thinking, “Hey — I think I’ll plan a terrible day today.” And yet, by the time you’re up, there’s already the feeling that something is wrong. It may be because something last night didn’t go so well. Or maybe it’s a bad feeling hangover from the day before. At any rate, the problem is your NUTs (Negative Unconscious Thoughts). Your NUTs are dangling in the background. And the real problem is that you don’t even know all those negative unconscious thoughts are there. So you have to pay attention. Which isn’t easy at first. But once you get the hang of it, you can actually focus on having a good day. And to do that, you need to ask — “What’s going right?”

Stop.

And that may sound like a bunch of malarkey. Or pie in the sky. Or like Pollyanna. But it’s not. Instead, asking what’s going right is just a different mindset — a mindset that has the potential to change the course and direction of your day. So if you’re going to make this a day that doesn’t suck quite as much as yesterday, you’re going to have to stop and take stock of this particular day before it just happens. And that’s going to take a little bit of work on your part. But it’s worth it.

Man up.

It’s worth it, because it means the difference between a good day and a bad day. You do know that you have the power to make this a better day, right? But it’s going to take some work and some focus. So it’s time to man up and change your focus. And it’s so simple. So don’t make it harder than it needs to be. Check out this brief TED talk, and change your focus, man!
